ARTIST ALERT: GET KNOW DRAKE

In just the last few years, Canadian rapper/actor, Drake has supplanted himself as a Hip Hop artist to watch in 2009. With his latest mixtape, So Far Gone [click to listen], dropping last week, the Toronto transplant spoke to Complex.com about the new project, comparisons to Kanye West, and his work with Lil Wayne.

Describing So Far Gone as a story read through melody, Drake explained the concept of the album cover and title. “It’s this kid in pursuit of love and money...sometimes you just get so far gone, you get wrapped up in this shit.” Drakeadded, “The title has a lot of meanings—as the way we carry ourselves, the way we dress, the way people view us, not to sound cocky, it’s just that feeling that we’re just distanced in a good way.”

Along with his commendable lyricism, Drake has also proven himself to be exceptional crooner on So Far Gone. Commenting on the current trends recently set by T-Pain and Kanye West’s 808s & Heartbreak [click to read], Drake made it clear that as far as singing goes, he’s in his own lane.

“Kanye West has an amazing mind, but he always has the means that when he thinks something, he can make it happen right away. But I’ve been singing way before ‘808s and Heartbreak.’ I’ve been in the R&B world for a long time, writing for artists, writing for myself, playing with different sounds and stuff.”

Expressing his dedication to R&B, Drake continued, “I love R&B music, man, that’s what you gotta understand, I listen to R&B music more than I listen to rap. That’s kinda my thing. I just want to make genuinely sexy music for women to listen to and for men to play for women.”

With a huge co-sign from Lil Wayne, and subsequently touring with the New Orleans native, Drake is more than on his way to Hip Hop stardom. When asked if he has ever ghostwritten for Weezy though, Drake made it clear that work in the booth is collaborative. “You know, we’re all great artists, great minds, and we all just contribute to each other; there’s been times when Wayne has helped me out, and I’m sure, I hope, I’ve influenced him to do or say things on tracks. We help each other out, that’s part of being two artists who respect each others’ creativity.”

Jen and I cannot get enough of The-Dream's album, we love it! Album drops March 10th, so all ya'll have to go cop it. My favorite track is "Make Love To Me", "Sweat It Out", "Right Side of My Brain" and uhhh I can keep going. I think this second time around, his album is more pop influenced as oppose to his debut album but, that's the way music is going. I still think he's a very talented writer and this album offers a variety of sounds. I am not sure if all 16 tracks will make it to the U.S. album cut as am told he is putting a different version out in the U.K.!!! Album cover looks good, very Ray Kay lol. Love vs. Money, WE DIG IT!

Martin Louie King Jr., address him as such, formally known as Kanye West recently taped an episode of VH1 Storytellers last week, which will reveal how the eccentric artist made each of his hit albums. West, who taped his episode at Sony Stages in Los Angeles, gave exclusive performances of a number of his hit records from each of four albums, including his latest, 808's & Heartbreak. Additionally, West explained his thought process behind creating each record, in accord with the Storyteller's format. In the upcoming March issue of of Details magazine, West, who is featured on the cover, gave readers a glimpse into how he created 808 & Heartbreak and reiterated his claim to be retiring from Hip-Hop to focus on fashion. "There's nothing more to be said about music," the 31-year-old artist told Details. "I'm the fucking end-all, be-all of music. I know what I'm doing. I did 808s in three weeks. I got it. It's on cruise control. Man, we talked about music for God knows how long! Now let's talk about how my fu**ing sweater didn't come back right from Korea. That's what's interesting me." According to the article, West, who recently launched a line of sneakers with Louis Vuitton in Paris *sigh*, is serious about his move to the fashion capital of the world to pursue a career in fashion.

"I'm moving to Paris and I have a relationship with Louis Vuitton, and it's like, Look how far I took that relationship to the biggest record label, and look where I took it in music," said West, who earned over $40 million dollars in 2008.

Live Nation Merges With Ticketmaster!

LiveNation and Ticketmaster Entertainment may announce a merger later on this week, according to Reuters. If the union between the two companies were to occur, it would signify the emergence of a powerful music industry presence with a joint market value of over $700 million. Dubbed “LiveNation Ticketmaster,” the conglomerate would consist of the world’s largest concert promoter, and one of the top ticketing companies. Together, the firms are linked to more than 200 artists including Madonna, Shakira, and Jay-Z.

Live Nation made headlines back in April of ’08 after landing a $150 million deal with artist Jay-Z [click to read]. Although Live Nation deals mostly with concert promotion, the company has been expanding business ventures by signing “360” record deals with artists, most of who get to keep the rights to their own music.

There are a few problems facing the possible merger, including managerial and contract matters. One issue that consumers face will be Live Nation Ticketmaster’s stronghold on concert tickets. As a huge influence on concert ticket sales, many fear that ticket prices will be driven up and that the powerhouse’s success will translate into a potential monopoly aka major $$$$!

As one music label source tells the Los Angeles Times, “[The merger may] face antitrust issues from managers, record companies, ticketing companies, and concert promoters to name a few—not to mention the Obama administration will be very tough on this stuff.” (Billboard).

"Kanye West has turned his talents as pop artist to books," Charlies Miers, VP and publisher at Rizzoli said via a written statement. "With a CD that includes 'Star Wars'-like symphonics from the show as well as interview with Spike Jonze, it is not only a memento of one of the most successful musical performances of the year, it is an experience all its own."

Aside from leaked videos from various news sources, bloggers and West himself, the book will provide a behind the scenes look at the tour. During the tour, fans were banned from bringing cameras to capture images from West's Star Wars-inspired sets.

"This is the only and official record of one of the most highly anticipated tours of the year," adds Miers. "Including a USB drive of previously unreleased music, the book is both a memento of the tour and an object conceived by the artist himself—entirely collectible on its own."

Lil Wayne has announced a tentative April 7 release date for his next album, "Rebirth," a Universal spokesperson confirms ;) First single "Prom Queen," produced by Infamous and Drew Correa ("Mr. Carter"), was serviced to media over the weekend and was debuted live on Wayne's MySpace this past Tuesday. In addition, "Prom Queen" debuted t on the social networking site Facebook as part of a partnership between Lil Wayne and AT n' T. The rapper perform the single for the first time during a concert in San Diego, which was streamed live on AT n' T’s FREEdom of Choice and Mobile Music Facebook pages. “We have streamed festivals and shows in the past, but this is the first time AT n' T has streamed a live performance for our Facebook pages,” AT n' T spokesperson Heather Buffington told Billboard. According to Huffington, AT n' T customers downloaded Lil Wayne ringtones more than any other artist last year. He’s also the most popular artist with a Facebook page, she adds. Following the show, a "Prom Queen" ringtone will be available to AT n' T customers for purchase via text or through the AT n' T Media Mall from handsets or online. In this week's chart, Beyonce holds at No. 2, Kanye West steps up on the charts, the Notorious soundtrack falls back to No.9, Jamie Foxx and John Legend become golden. R&B superstar Beyonce's I Am...Sasha Fierce stands atop her competition this week at No. 2 with 50,900 discs moved. According to Nielsen Soundscan, the singer's third solo disc stands at 1,685,300. Kanye West's 808's & Heartbreak moved up one spot this week landing at No. 4 with 39,200 scanned units. After nine weeks on shelves, Ye's latest project has sold 1,224,100 pieces. Singer-turned-reality star Keyshia Cole's A Different Me took a three-spot boost to No. 6 with 31,300 albums sold this week. The singer's third project stands at 601,700 after a month and a half in stores. Academy Award-winning singer Jamie Foxx's Intuition stayed at No. 8 this week with 30,300 sold discs. After six weeks in stores, Foxx's latest album has broken the 500K mark with 509,900 scanned pieces.

Likewise, John Legend's third disc, Evolver, cracked 500K by scanning 12,200 this week. While Evolver dropped eight spots to No. 41 after 13 weeks, the disc has topped off at 502,600. The Notorious soundtrack slid five spots to No. 9 this week with 29,000 albums sold. With two weeks on shelves, the compilation has moved a total of 72,000.

Grammy-winning singer Mariah Carey's Ballads entered the charts this week at No. 10. Her compilation project sold 28,700 discs after seven days. Akon's Freedom dropped five spots to No. 17 with 21,500. After two months of availability, Akon's newest release has sold 421,900. The "King of the South" T.I. ' has taken a small step back. HisPaper Trail slid down a notch to No. 18 with 20,900 sold pieces. After 17 weeks on shelves, Tip's sixth solo project has sold 1,617,700.

R&B hottie Rihanna's Good Girl Gone Bad also dropped a couple slots this week landing at No. 22 with 17,500. The singer's latest album has sold 2,312,100 copies after 86 weeks.

Southern rap star Lil' Wayne's Tha Carter III slid three spots to No. 26 this week with 15,900 scanned albums. Weezy's latest disc has sold 2,949,400 copies after 33 weeks.

Grammy-winning singer Ne-Yo's Year of the Gentlemanremained at No. 29 this week with 15,000 sold pieces. With 19 weeks under his belt, Ne-Yo's third album has sold 842,100 copies.

Atlanta-bred rapper Ludacris' Theater of the Mind slid nine spots to No. 34 this week pushing 14,100 discs. After nine weeks, Luda's sixth disc has sold 518,200.

Southern crooner Anthony Hamilton's Point of it All fell seven slots to No. 39 this week with 12,900 sold copies. With six weeks in the books, Hamilton's latest album has sold 239,000.

Florida-based rapper Plies' Da REAList took a one notch drop to No. 42 this week moving 12,100 copies. After a month and a half in stores, his latest release has sold 229,500.

A recent blog posted that Diddy is working on his new album due out in September and it's going to be all auto tune!!! It seems that everyone wants to try auto tune nowadays lol! I'm actually looking forward to this album as we haven't heard much from "Diddy" himself so, it should be interesting!!! Some of the tracks will be featuring Dawn's, of Danity Kane, vocals.

Kanye West And The-Dream Doing A Joint Album???

According a hip hop site, after Dream releases both of his albums Love vs. Money & Love King, he will be hitting the studio with Kanye West to work on a joint album. In a recent interview with DJ Skee, Dream said, " The fourth album you hear from me will probably be a record done with Kanye".

Dream went on to say that Kanye West mentioned he needs to "up" his celebrity stature. As The-Dream is successfully known for writing and producing and still coming up as an artist, Dream added, " I told Kanye I was going to lift my Profile".

I think this collabo would be NUTS...be on the look out for this one!!!

One more thing!

Dream is said to be out in L.A. today shooting his video to my favorite song "Rockin That Thang"! :) Can't wait to peep the video!!!

50's Album Pushed Back AGAIN and Lands More Films!

Ok so 50 Cent recently announced at the Sundance Film Festival that he has started a film production company called Cheetah Vision. Through Cheetah Vision, he has purchased eight scripts already. "They are all different types of movies that I bought the rights to, and we're developing projects," 50 says. "You will see different things from me in the future." 50 will make his directorial debut with "Before I Self Destruct" a free DVD included with his upcoming album of the same name. Originally the album was going to be released last year then it was pushed to February 4th of this year. Now 50's website is reporting that the album has once again been pushed back, hitting stores sometime in March...Wuh? Is this the new 09 trend? The G-Unit general slash "actor" (actually we're not mad at him) will also be hitting the big screen in 2009. 50 will star alongside Val Kilmer and JennyLuv ;) in the police drama "Streets Of Blood" plus the rapper is attached to two other films that are currently in production, "13" and "Dead Man Running." Hov's Blueprint 3 In Sight!

Although there have been many reports that Jigga's "Blueprint 3" would be coming soon, Jay-Z says he is taking his time. "For me, the process of making an album is difficult with so many things going on," Jigga says. "And me, I wanna make it beyond and above. I'm gonna take my time with it. I don't have any quotas, and that's a good thing. It may be too freeing. It's a good thing and a bad thing. You know, I think I need some restrictions. 'Cause if I had restrictions, I would have done it in three weeks. I would have made what I believe to be a great piece of art. I actually recorded a lot of records already. You know, all those records that leaked [online] were on The Blueprint 3."

Previously Kanye had said he recently finished Jay-Z's album, even giving a release date. "I'm constantly making music. We almost finished with Jay album." Kanye said "We almost finished before I even dropped my album. Jay album is coming in February." Kanye is producing most, if not all, of the album. Jay-Z says he will leak the finished version of "Jockin Jay-Z" soon as he ads a third verse (Rap Basement). Hahaha, I had to put this Jay pic up...maybe all this quality time with Kanye is NOT fashionably influencing him...I'll stamp these shades as a "No No". Although, sourMILK might want them!

Clipse On Music Layoffs and Album

The music industry has been cutting a lot of jobs lately including the two executives who brought The Clipse to Sony Music but Pusha T says that won't affect the release of their upcoming album, "Till The Casket Drops." Pusha told MTV news "It's not gonna affect us. We're too far done with the album. The thing about us, it was never lack of music. Our problems have been an executing and marketing issue. I think we got a pretty good stronghold on it. I heard about the Hip Hop and Al Branch situation. I'm sure all of that is going to work itself out in our favor." "Till The Casket Drops" will feature production from The Neptunes, DJ Khalil, Swizz Beatz,Sean C. and LV. The first single from the upcoming will be "Kinda Like A Beg Deal" and Pushasays "It's about being kinda like a big deal. The collabo on there, the record in general, it's kinda like a big deal."
